He assessed the entire house, gave me options and clearly explained the process. Everyone from Mike, to the secretary in the office to the workers were absolutely amazing. They did the work as promised, gave us a reasonable price, and left the place immaculate. We could not be happier with the results! This is a great family owned business. You can’t go wrong!Posted on Google rose smithTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The work was done with the utmost professionalism and competence. The service representative was very thorough in examining the dehumidifier, air purifier and sump pump and provided any service needed including draining the pump.Posted on Google Craig TodaroTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mark took it upon himself to come to my home and examine my issue himself. He is knowledgeable not only in basement waterproofing, but also in land grading, excavating and several other adjacent topics. While it was concluded my issue was not foundation oriented, he did not hesitate to propose several other creative ideas to help address my issue. He has a great disposition, and I would not hesitate to recommend his services to others.Posted on Google Linda RussoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I bought my house 24 years ago, and for 24 years I lived with water coming in to my finished basement. A few years back I hired another company to put in a French Drain System which never worked. As the storms got worse the water in my basement increased. Because of my previous experience I was hesitant to hire another company until I read about ACM and met Mark who was highly recommended by my Home Service Company. Mark spent about 2 hours explaining the process, and what was needed. In February 2025 ACM put a extensive French Drain System which included taking down the sheet rock walls, demoing tile and placing a membrane along the whole perimeter of the drain system. All of this work was completed in 3 days exactly what Mark said. The guys were professional, polite, and best of all they were careful to save my Radiant Heating System which was under the tile. Since the French Drain System was placed I have not had 1 drop of water coming into my basement. I am very grateful to Mark's ACM Company, and was able to refinish my basement without fear of water damage. I highly recommend ACM Basement Water Proofing to all who are having water problems with their basement.Posted on Google Maria LacosteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I chose ACM because of their "Best of Long Island" award, and I'm glad I did. Mark's crew (led by Joe) installed an interior French drain and a sump pump in our basement. Six months later, we've had no problems with water. These guys know what they're doing.Posted on Google Links2282Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My wife and I would like to say thank you to Mark and his team for their excellent work installing a French Drain in our finished basement. For years we had to worry about flooding if we got a large amount of rain in a short time. The entire staff was totally professional. knowledgeable, competent and efficient. They were clean and caring and after each day they protected the whole worksite. Without a doubt, we would recommend them for all your basement waterproofing needs.Posted on Google Peter WebbTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I called acm after finding water in the basement. Mark answered the call and quickly helped diagnose the issue. He guided me to check baseboard and sure enough a broken valve was causing this leak. It's good to find someone to help a homeowner without rushing to take their money. It's good to find a honest business man
Basement Water Solutions
If your basement smells musty or the air feels damp and heavy, you’re picking up on something real. A lot of Long Island homeowners notice the odor before they ever see actual water. The space feels stale, humid, and a little off, and no matter how many times you air it out, the smell keeps coming back.
This isn’t just unpleasant. It’s usually a sign that moisture is building up below your home, and that can affect your air quality, your finished spaces, and the long-term health of the structure itself.
At ACM Basement Waterproofing, we help homeowners throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties track down the source of damp basement air and fix it at the root, not just cover it up.
We make it simple, affordable, and stress-free — with guaranteed results.
That familiar musty basement smell develops when moisture gets trapped in a space with limited airflow. Concrete walls and floors absorb moisture naturally, and when humidity stays elevated, that moisture slowly releases back into the air.
Basements tend to be cooler than the rest of the house. When warm, humid air moves into that cooler space, it condenses on surfaces. Over time, this feeds odor-causing bacteria and creates conditions where mold can start growing, even if you can’t see it yet.
In many Long Island homes, moisture also comes up from the ground. Groundwater pressure pushes moisture through foundation walls and floors, raising humidity levels throughout the basement. Even a small amount of moisture can create a persistent damp basement smell when there’s nowhere for it to go.
Basement humidity problems are especially widespread here because of a mix of environmental and structural factors.
The high water table is a major contributor. Across much of Long Island, moisture sits just below the surface, which means it’s constantly working its way toward your foundation. Coastal basement moisture adds another layer, especially in warmer months when humid air gets trapped inside cooler below-grade spaces.
Older construction plays a role too. Many homes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties were built before modern moisture control and ventilation standards existed. And while finished basements are great for living space, they often restrict airflow and trap humidity even more.
Seasonal shifts matter as well. After heavy rain or snowmelt, groundwater levels rise and push more moisture in Long Island toward your basement, even when no water is visible inside.
A musty odor is usually just the first clue. Other signs that moisture in basement air is becoming an issue:
These warning signs often show up well before you notice any visible water in your Long Island basement.
Here’s something a lot of homeowners don’t realize: damp air and musty smells are often early warnings of a larger moisture issue.
Humidity problems tend to show up before visible water does. Moisture entering through foundation walls or the slab raises humidity levels first. Over time, that same moisture can turn into standing water in the basement or lead to wet basement carpet that stays damp no matter what you do.
If things go unaddressed long enough, more serious problems like basement flooding can develop when storms hit Long Island.
Catching it at the damp air stage gives you more options and keeps repair costs down.
Most people try a few things on their own before calling for help. That’s understandable. But these common fixes might make the space smell better for a day or two without doing anything about the actual problem.
Approaches that don’t work long term:
As long as moisture keeps entering the basement, the damp air and basement odor will keep coming back to your Long Island home.
Real solutions focus on two things: stopping moisture at the source and improving how air circulates through the space.
First, you have to keep moisture from getting in. For most Long Island homes, that means installing drainage systems that intercept groundwater before it raises humidity levels inside. Interior systems like french drain systems and properly sized sump pump systems do the heavy lifting here.
Then, airflow needs attention. Basement ventilation systems help manage humidity and support moisture control, but they work best as part of a broader waterproofing strategy. Ventilation alone won’t stop water from coming in.

Question: Why does my Long Island basement smell musty even when it looks completely dry?
Moisture doesn’t have to be visible to cause problems. High humidity and condensation on cooler surfaces are often enough to produce that damp basement smell, even when there’s no standing water in sight.
Question: Is a musty smell a sign of mold?
It can be. Musty odors usually mean conditions are right for mold growth, even if you can’t see any yet. If your Long Island basement smells musty and the odor keeps returning, it’s worth investigating.
Question: Can ventilation alone fix the problem?
Ventilation helps move air around, but it doesn’t stop moisture from entering in the first place. Long-term fixes usually require addressing the source of the moisture, not just improving airflow.
Question: Should I run a dehumidifier all the time?
Dehumidifiers can help manage humidity levels, but they’re not a permanent solution if groundwater or moisture intrusion is the underlying issue. They treat the symptom, not the cause.
Question: When should I call a Long Island Basement professional?
It’s a good idea to schedule an inspection if odors keep coming back, humidity stays high no matter what you try, or damp conditions return after you’ve aired the space out. The sooner you identify the source, the easier it is to fix.
