He assessed the entire house, gave me options and clearly explained the process. Everyone from Mike, to the secretary in the office to the workers were absolutely amazing. They did the work as promised, gave us a reasonable price, and left the place immaculate. We could not be happier with the results! This is a great family owned business. You can’t go wrong!Posted on Google rose smithTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The work was done with the utmost professionalism and competence. Mark took it upon himself to come to my home and examine my issue himself. He is knowledgeable not only in basement waterproofing, but also in land grading, excavating and several other adjacent topics. While it was concluded my issue was not foundation oriented, he did not hesitate to propose several other creative ideas to help address my issue. He has a great disposition, and I would not hesitate to recommend his services to others.Posted on Google Linda RussoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I bought my house 24 years ago, and for 24 years I lived with water coming in to my finished basement. A few years back I hired another company to put in a French Drain System which never worked. As the storms got worse the water in my basement increased. Because of my previous experience I was hesitant to hire another company until I read about ACM and met Mark who was highly recommended by my Home Service Company. Mark spent about 2 hours explaining the process, and what was needed. In February 2025 ACM put a extensive French Drain System which included taking down the sheet rock walls, demoing tile and placing a membrane along the whole perimeter of the drain system. All of this work was completed in 3 days exactly what Mark said. The guys were professional, polite, and best of all they were careful to save my Radiant Heating System which was under the tile. Since the French Drain System was placed I have not had 1 drop of water coming into my basement. I am very grateful to Mark's ACM Company, and was able to refinish my basement without fear of water damage. I highly recommend ACM Basement Water Proofing to all who are having water problems with their basement.Posted on Google Maria LacosteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I chose ACM because of their "Best of Long Island" award, and I'm glad I did. Mark's crew (led by Joe) installed an interior French drain and a sump pump in our basement. Six months later, we've had no problems with water. These guys know what they're doing.Posted on Google Links2282Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My wife and I would like to say thank you to Mark and his team for their excellent work installing a French Drain in our finished basement. For years we had to worry about flooding if we got a large amount of rain in a short time. The entire staff was totally professional. knowledgeable, competent and efficient. They were clean and caring and after each day they protected the whole worksite. Without a doubt, we would recommend them for all your basement waterproofing needs.Posted on Google Peter WebbTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I called acm after finding water in the basement. Mark answered the call and quickly helped diagnose the issue. He guided me to check baseboard and sure enough a broken valve was causing this leak. It's good to find someone to help a homeowner without rushing to take their money. It's good to find a honest business man
Basement Water Solutions
A wet basement carpet is often the first clue that something’s going on beneath the surface. Maybe you’ve stepped on carpet that felt damp or cool. Maybe there’s a musty smell you can’t seem to get rid of. Or maybe everything dries out for a few days, only to get soggy again after the next rain.
Here’s the thing: carpet and padding soak up moisture fast, often before you ever see water on the floor. So when your basement carpet is wet, it’s rarely just a carpet problem. It usually points to ongoing moisture issues or groundwater that’s finding its way inside.
At ACM Basement Waterproofing in Long Island, we help homeowners across Nassau and Suffolk Counties figure out why their basement carpet keeps getting wet and how to fix it for good.
We make it simple, affordable, and stress-free — with guaranteed results.
There are a few common reasons carpet ends up wet in basement spaces, and most of them tie back to conditions we see all the time in Long Island homes.
Groundwater pressure is a big one. In many parts of the island, the water table sits high enough that moisture pushes up through the concrete slab after rain or snowmelt. You might not see puddles, but that moisture can wick into your carpet padding and stay trapped there for days.
Water entry at the floor-wall joint is another culprit. The seam where your basement floor meets the foundation wall is a natural weak spot. Moisture travels through it easily and can spread under finished flooring before you notice anything’s wrong.
Drainage problems around the foundation also play a role. Clogged perimeter drains, outdated systems, and aging sump pumps let groundwater build up where it shouldn’t. Older Long Island homes are especially prone to this if drainage hasn’t been updated in decades.
Humidity is a factor too. Coastal basement moisture from the air, combined with limited airflow, can raise moisture levels in below-grade spaces. Over time, that humidity settles into carpet and padding.
Many Long Island homeowners first notice these issues while dealing with standing water in the basement or persistent dampness in one part of the floor.

There are a few reasons why basement water problems are so common on Long Island. It comes down to local geology, groundwater behavior, and the age of many homes in the area.
The high water table is a major factor. In much of Long Island, groundwater sits just a few feet below the surface. After rain or snowmelt, that water rises and pushes against your basement floor and foundation walls. You don’t need visible cracks for water to find its way in. It can seep through joints, porous concrete, and tiny openings you’d never notice.
Soil composition matters too. Sandy soil lets water travel sideways toward the foundation, while clay pockets trap moisture against basement walls. Many Long Island neighborhoods have a mix of both, which makes groundwater movement around your home unpredictable.
Older homes face additional challenges. Drainage systems installed 30 or 40 years ago can clog, crack, or simply stop working. Sump pumps installed in your Long Island home may be undersized for today’s storms or running on borrowed time. Small foundation cracks that aren’t visible from inside can still let water through when the pressure builds.
These conditions make standing water a recurring headache in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, especially in low-lying areas, near the coast, and along the South Shore and North Shore.
A damp basement carpet doesn’t always look obviously wet. Here’s what to watch for:
If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth looking into before things get worse.
It’s easy to write off damp carpet as a minor nuisance. But when moisture gets trapped in carpet and padding, it creates the perfect environment for mold to grow. And mold doesn’t announce itself. It often develops out of sight, right beneath the carpet surface, affecting the air quality in your entire home.
Beyond mold, ongoing moisture can damage subfloors, baseboards, and framing. If you’ve invested in finishing your basement, a soggy basement carpet and the problems that come with it can undo that work quickly. The longer the issue goes unaddressed, the more expensive repairs tend to get.
From a health standpoint, damp carpet can trigger allergies and respiratory issues, particularly for kids or anyone sensitive to basement mold and mildew.
In a lot of cases, water under basement carpet in Long Island homes is an early warning sign of something bigger.
Carpet and padding act like a sponge. They absorb moisture and hide it from view. That’s why homeowners often notice their basement floor is wet under carpet before they ever see visible puddles.
What this usually means is that groundwater is coming in below the surface and spreading underneath your finished flooring. If it’s not addressed, that moisture can turn into standing basement water or, when storms hit hard, basement flooding.
Catching it early gives you more options and lower repair costs.
Most Long Island homeowners try a few things on their own before calling for help. That makes sense. But while some of these approaches might dry the carpet temporarily, they don’t do anything about where the water is actually coming from.
Fixes that don’t hold up over time:
As long as moisture keeps entering from below or along the foundation, your carpet will keep getting wet. It’s just a matter of time.
The real solution is stopping moisture before it ever reaches your basement floor or finished surfaces.
For most Long Island homes, that means installing an interior perimeter drainage system. These systems intercept groundwater right at the foundation, collect it at floor level, and direct it toward a sump pump before it has a chance to spread under your carpet.
French drain systems are designed to relieve hydrostatic pressure and prevent moisture from building up beneath your floor.
Sump pumps handle the heavy lifting, removing collected water and moving it safely away from your home. Proper sizing and reliable operation matter, especially during storms when the system is working hardest.
In some situations, improving airflow helps support these systems. Basement ventilation systems can be part of a broader moisture control strategy, but ventilation on its own won’t stop water from getting in.
Question: Why is my basement carpet wet when there’s no standing water?
Moisture often enters through the slab or along the foundation and spreads beneath the carpet before it’s visible on the surface. Padding absorbs water quickly, so your basement floor can be wet under the carpet even when everything looks dry on top. This is especially common in Long Island homes with high groundwater levels.
Question: Is wet basement carpet a mold risk?
Yes. Damp carpet and padding are ideal breeding grounds for mold. It often develops underneath the carpet where you can’t see it, which is why a basement carpet that smells musty shouldn’t be ignored.
Question: How do I dry wet basement carpet?
You can remove surface moisture with fans and dehumidifiers, but that only addresses what’s already there. If moisture keeps entering from below, your carpet will get wet again. The key is identifying and fixing the source.
Question: Should I remove wet basement carpet?
If carpet and padding have stayed wet for an extended period, removal may be the safest option to prevent mold and further damage. A professional inspection can help you figure out whether drying is enough or if replacement makes more sense.
Question: When should I call a professional?
Reach out if your carpet stays damp, moisture keeps coming back after you dry things out, musty odors won’t go away, or you’re planning to finish or renovate your basement. It’s better to get ahead of the problem than deal with bigger repairs later.
