Hydrostatic Pressure & French Drain Systems
Rising groundwater is one of the most common causes of water intrusion. As the water pressure builds on the outside of a home, it will push water through even the tiniest cracks and spaces in your basement floor and walls.
Like any fluid, water is constantly seeking an area of lower pressure, and in this case, the area of lower pressure is the inside of your basement.
The goal of a pressure relief system, or french drain, is to give this water a place to go — a place other than the basement floor of your Long Island home. In some parts of the country, this system is called a drain tile, but in the Northeast, it is more commonly known as the French drain.
How does a French Drain work?
One of the biggest problems in basement waterproofing is designing a French drain system that can deal with incoming water no matter where it comes from. At first, it may seem like the best option is to simply seal up the structure so that water cannot enter.
This option is problematic, however, because water will always find some other way of entering your Long Island home—the water has to go somewhere, and it wants to go to a nice, open, low-pressure zone, i.e., the basement.
Rather than attempting to seal the home, thereby giving the water no place to go, the French drain system receives incoming water so it can either drain into the ground or be pumped outside.

Deep Pressure Relief with a French Drain
An ACM French drain (named after Henry French) consists of a flexible perforated pipe that is installed below the floor around the perimeter of the basement. At the very edge of the floor, where the floor meets the wall, we leave a 3/4 inch drain channel; if water leaks in through the walls, it will enter this channel and trickle into the perforated drain pipe.
As this drain pipe begins to fill with water, the water will flow into a sump where it can safely be pumped from your basement. If water enters through the footing joint, it will end up in the french drain pipe.
Even if the water table begins to rise in the middle of the basement, this, too will be drawn toward the French drain’s low-pressure zone located beneath the basement floor.
You may also have heard of a pressure relief system. A pressure relief system is just another name for a french drain system.
How to Install a French Drain in My Long Island Home?
At ACM Basement Waterproofing, we understand that starting a drainage project can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re concerned about disrupting your carefully maintained landscape. That’s why we specialize in interior French drain installations, protecting your Long Island home from the inside while leaving your outdoor spaces untouched. Let’s break down the installation process.
PREPARATION
We begin by thoroughly protecting your belongings with plastic sheeting and using filtered air machines to minimize dust. Our team then creates a precise perimeter trench in the floor along your basement walls, preparing the space for your new Long Island drainage system.
PERIMETER TRENCH AND FRENCH DRAIN
In the trench we install a french drain with carefully layered gravel. Strategic weep holes in your walls relieve hydrostatic pressure. Every component is positioned to channel water efficiently toward your sump pump system.
SUMP PUMP INTEGRATION
We install a reliable sump pump and connect it with durable PVC piping to your exterior drainage system, ensuring that collected water is safely discharged away from the foundation of your Long Island home.
COVERING THE PERIMETER FRENCH DRAIN
The system is completed with high-strength concrete covering the french, and thorough site cleanup. You’ll never know we were there – except for your newly dry basement.

WARNING SIGNS YOU NEED A FRENCH DRAIN
Many Long Island homeowners discover they need a French drain after noticing concerning signs of water damage. Given our region’s high water table and frequent coastal storms, common indicators include flooding in basements or crawl spaces or the failure of existing waterproofing systems.
You might spot white, flaky mineral deposits (efflorescence) on your walls – a telltale sign of water seepage common in Long Island’s humid climate. Persistent musty odors often signal hidden moisture problems, while visible wall cracks or bowing suggest more serious structural issues.
Pay attention to your home’s response during Long Island’s heavy rainfall. If downspouts overflow or you notice water stains appearing on basement walls, these are red flags that shouldn’t be ignored. The impact can extend beyond property damage – family members might experience increased allergies or illness due to mold growth. Even appliances like water heaters can show signs of trouble through premature rusting.
